Keep the names apart

Searches often say "rare variants," "drip creatures," and "endangered creatures" as if they were one list. In build 25604825 they are not.

  • Drip is the creature flag IsDrip. A drip creature swaps to its drip mesh. The labels are Drip and Drip Creatures.
  • Endangered Species is a different flag. Inspect adds that official label under the weight and killscore lines when the flag is set. The killscore bonus of the same name is 1.25x and is explained on the trick-shot page.
  • "Rare variant" is not a third official category in the localization tables or in these two flags. Do not merge a creature into drip or endangered because the English words look close.

Collector is "find and kill all the creatures." Fishipedia is "find and kill all drip creatures." Finishing one does not finish the other. Both descriptions are on the achievement list.

How a drip creature appears

When a rod hooks a creature, the game rolls a whole number from 0 up to, but not including, 100. If the creature is not a boss and the roll is below 10 plus the wishbone bonus, it is set to drip.

The wishbone shop shows that chance as a percent moving from the current bonus to the next one, starting from the base 10. Patch 1.1.3 also says the fishipedia shows the bait name after you have killed that fish once. That is an identification hint. It is not a rate.

Boss-type creatures are skipped by this roll. A story boss does not become a drip creature through this hook.

Shrimp is its own item. The game also has a drip mesh asset for shrimp. That does not create an official item called Drip Shrimp. Check Inspect, or the drip mesh, instead of the species name.

There is no per-species rate on this page. The only number the hook uses is the shared 10-plus-wishbone roll.

Endangered species

The tourist on the third island asks for an endangered creature and says you will know it when you see it. The quest asset is stricter than that sentence. It accepts exactly one of these items:

  • Superdwarf Fish
  • Seahorse
  • Oarfish
  • Needlefish
  • Dripper
  • Bowlfish
  • Bing Bong

Any one of them completes the hand-in. The reward is the Carrot, which the bait table uses only for the Pufferfish. That step is in the walkthrough.

Inspect is the in-game label. If the endangered line is missing, the flag is not set on that creature, even if the species is on the quest list above. The quest list is what the hand-in accepts. The Inspect line is the label.

What you can do with them

The casino NPC says to throw a drip creature, or a boss trophy, into the slot machine. That is a use for a drip creature you can spare. It is not required to finish the island hand-ins.

Do not sell the tourist's one required creature, or the Pufferfish Fin, before the hand-in. A drip version of an ordinary fish is still that fish for Collector, and it is also a drip creature for Fishipedia.
